Located on the eastern portion of the Central Valley at the edge of the foothills, Oakdale is known by locals and visitors alike as the "Cowboy Capital of the World". A distinction earned as host of an annual rodeo, held for the last 59 years in April. In keeping with the rodeo and western spirit, Oakdale has a number of western-themed statues as well as a local Cowboy Museum, open year-round.

Oakdale is also known as the "Gateway to Yosemite", given it's proximity to the Sierra Nevada's on California Highway 120. Every year tourists from all over the world visit Oakdale on their way to Yosemite. Locals and visitors alike appreciate the small-town, down to earth charm present in Oakdale. A city of just under 20,000 Oakdale has one city high school, a junior high school, plus several elementary schools. Oakdale schools exceed California student testing standards yearly.

The Sconza Candy Company produces a multitude of confections shipped throughout the country, employing hundreds of local residents. The facility was previously home to Hershey Chocolate Company. To this day, Oakdale celebrates its chocolate heritage with an annual festival.

The Stanislaus River winds through Oakdale, offering opportunities for fishing and other water sports. Oakdale also offers an 18-hole golf course and country club, dozens of community parks and abundant sunshine throughout the year.
