About Hornitos

The town of Hornitos is the nearest mining town for active mining in the nearby mountains and was featured in the movie Ride the High Country. It is located on Burns Creek and 14 miles south of Coulterville.

The name, Hornitos, means “little ovens” in Spanish and was derived from the community’s Old Mexican tombstones that were built in the shape of square bake ovens. The town is registered as a California Historical Landmark #333.
